My Story
I interviewed at 11 medical schools through BSMD programs, and was accepted to 9 of them, all with acceptance rates <3%. I ultimately had the privilege of going to my dream accelerated medical program (Northwestern HPME, with a top 10 undergrad and top 20 medical school).
Northwestern HPME took 20 students out of more than 3000 qualified applicants, each of whom had stellar test scores and extracurriculars. I was not president at a large club, was not the valedictorian/salutatorian of my high school, so how did I achieve this?
There is a formula for getting into medical school: baseline 3.9+ GPA, 1500+ SAT/34 ACT, medical field exposure, leadership, and research experience.
You’re now at the starting line.
After these prerequisites, the 3000 applicants go down to 1000. 1/3 of applicants get past the application screeners. At this point, essays are key - ability to frame your life experiences in a cogent, compelling manner winnows the 1000 applicants to 100 students for interview.
Among these 100 prospective doctors, only 20 pass the fate-altering interview process, where preparation meets opportunity.
